If you’re considering a roof replacement and are evaluating different options, you may come across the term “3-tab shingles.” What is a 3-tab shingle, anyway? It’s not exactly rocket science… A 3-tab Atlas shingles is are distinguished by three uniform cutouts, or tabs, made along the lower edge of the shingles. Their very simple design makes 3-tab shingles easy to install and easy to repair. Because the shingle pattern is always the same, it’s easy to foresee what you’ll end up with when the roof is fully installed. 3-tab shingles are engineered to be thin, yet durable, which makes them affordable and long-lasting at the same time.
Atlas makes two brands of 3-tab shingles, Glassmaster® and Legend®. Glassmaster comes with a warranty good for 30 years that covers damage from algae, manufacturer defects, and winds up to 60mph. Legend comes with a warranty good for 40 years and wind protection for winds up to 110mph. The shingles come with anti-algae protection Scotchgard® from 3M.

Architectural shingles are also referred to as laminated or dimensional shingles. Yes, architectural shingles are heftier and of higher-quality. Customarily, architectural shingles are composed of a fiberglass mat base and ceramic-coated mineral granules embedded in refined, water-resistant asphalt.
Architectural Atlas shingles tend to be 50% heavier than their 3-tab counterparts, which makes them a sturdier choice for homes and buildings frequently exposed to severe weather conditions, and Indiana is no stranger to bad weather conditions. For instance, while the risk of tornado damage in Fort Wayne is lower than Indiana’s average, it’s much higher than the national average.

3-tab shingles generally have warranties of 25 to 30 years. Architectural shingles typically come with warranties of 50 years, and some even have lifetime warranties.
