If you’re considering a roof replacement and are evaluating different options, you may come across the term “3-tab shingles.” What is a 3-tab shingle, anyway? It’s not exactly rocket science… A 3-tab Atlas shingles is are distinguished by three uniform cutouts, or tabs, made along the lower edge of the shingles. Their very simple design makes 3-tab shingles easy to install and easy to repair. Because the shingle pattern is always the same, it’s easy to foresee what you’ll end up with when the roof is fully installed. 3-tab shingles are engineered to be thin, yet durable, which makes them affordable and long-lasting at the same time.
Atlas makes two brands of 3-tab shingles, Glassmaster® and Legend®. Glassmaster comes with a warranty good for 30 years that covers damage from algae, manufacturer defects, and winds up to 60mph. Legend comes with a warranty good for 40 years and wind protection for winds up to 110mph. The shingles come with anti-algae protection Scotchgard® from 3M.
Atlas produces both 3-tab shingles and architectural shingles, and Maumee Rover Roofing has unmatched expertise in handling both these types, grades, or material. Architectural shingles are also referred to as laminated or dimensional shingles. Yes, architectural shingles are heftier and of higher-quality. Customarily, architectural shingles are composed of a fiberglass mat base and ceramic-coated mineral granules embedded in refined, water-resistant asphalt.
Architectural Atlas shingles tend to be 50% heavier than their 3-tab counterparts, which makes them a sturdier choice for homes and buildings frequently exposed to severe weather conditions, and Indiana is no stranger to bad weather conditions. For instance, while the risk of tornado damage in Fort Wayne is lower than Indiana’s average, it’s much higher than the national average.
Architectural shingles have more dimension than flat 3-tab products. In fact, architectural shingles from Atlas can be made to resemble cedar shakes or slate which can add much to an Indiana home’s curb appeal.
3-tab shingles are generally rated for winds of up to approximately 60 miles per hour (mph). Architectural Atlas shingles are typically rated for winds of between 80 mph and 120 mph.
Because Architectural shingles generally stand up well to wind, heat, snow, ice, and heavy rains, their lifespan can reach and even exceed 20 years. However, they may last up to 30 years under optimal conditions. When 3-tab shingles which are subject to weather conditions like that in northeast Indiana last 12 to 15 years
3-tab shingles generally have warranties of 25 to 30 years. Architectural shingles typically come with warranties of 50 years, and some even have lifetime warranties. When choosing an Atlas-brand shingle for your project, Maumee River Roofing will give you all the warranty details based on the product selected.
Material cost plus installation by Maumee River Roofing is normally going to be less expensive for 3-tab shingles, compared to our architectural shingles. But when you factor in the added lifespan of architectural shingles and the reduced repair costs that can be anticipated over the life of your roof system, property owners often find that the upgrade to architectural shingles makes perfect sense.
When you install an Atlas Signature Select” roofing system, all the components are designed for and backed by the industry’s best warranty coverage along with Maumee River Roofing’s workmanship warranty.
Unlike many other roofing warranties that overpromise and under-deliver, Atlas packs value and assurance into an enhanced premium protection period, which includes non-prorated labor and materials, tear-off and disposal fees, coverage of the full Atlas shingles and product system, and transferability.
